The most obvious difference between dogs is size. There are some really big dogs and there are tiny dogs. Obviously looking after a very large dog is very different to looking after a very small dog. Ask the previous owner, the dog shelter or the breeder what the dog is like, and consider whether this will be appropriate for your lifestyle. For instance, an active dog will require increased time outside and exercise.

There are other nuances between breeds that need to be considered also. For example, some dogs are completely bald and some have very long, thick coats whereas others are somewhere in between. A dog with a thick coat may have implications in terms of dog allergies, and will require more grooming.
